Demi-finales de la Coupe du Monde: deux mouches volent dans la salle de jeu...

Seule une blague d'Alexander Grischuk a réussi à égayer cette journée plutôt tranquille à la Coupe du Monde à Khanty-Mansiysk. Grischuk et son collègue Peter Svidler ne furent pas satisfaits de leurs positions avec les pièces blanches et ont rapidement proposé nulle autour du 20ème coup. Leurs adversaires ukrainiens aborderont la seconde partie dans le rôle des favoris.

Chinese lead in China

All four Chinese players at the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix in Shenzhen, China are now in the lead with 3.5/5. The only non-Chinese player to join them is Anna Muzychuk, born in Ukraine and currently playing for Slovenia. She could have taken the sole lead, but was unable to win a rook ending two pawns up against Zhao Xue.

Only a joke by Alexander Grischuk managed to liven up what was a quiet day at the FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk. Grischuk and his fellow Russian Peter Svidler were unhappy with the positions they got with the white pieces and offered draws around move 20. Their Ukrainian opponents gratefully accepted and will now go into the return classical game tomorrow as slight favourites.

Shipov on the fair play incident

Grandmaster Sergey Shipov has been the one constant of the Russian video commentary from Khanty-Mansiysk, with grandmasters like Alexander Khalifman (on Shipov's right in the photo) joining him from time to time. In an interview Shipov discussed the Navara – Moiseenko “fair play” incident, and also gave his predictions for the semifinals.

Bareev on nerves and junior chess

While no longer the head coach of the Russian men’s team Evgeny Bareev still has an overall coaching role and talked to Dmitry Kryakvin of the Russian Chess Federation website about the upcoming World and European junior events. He noted Russia now had financial support for children’s chess from Gazprom, the main sponsor of the Tal Memorial. He also talked about the stresses of junior events.

The Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk celebrated its “day of the city” with a chess tournament that culminated in the finalists (both candidate masters) playing a game of living chess.

Les Kings mènent à St Louis

Dans le tournoi Kings vs Queens à St Louis, l'équipe des hommes a pris la tête après deux rondes et mène 12-8. Après l'écrasante victoire des hommes 7-3 lors de la première ronde, les deux équipes se sont neutralisées au cours de la 2ème ronde avec notamment la première nulle concédée par Nakamura.

Kings lead in Saint Louis

In the Kings vs. Queens tournament in Saint Louis the men’s team has taken a 12-8 lead after 2 rounds. Momentum is with the women, however, as after a crushing 7-3 win for the men on the first day the teams only drew on the second, with Hikaru Nakamura conceding his first draw of the event.
